It is a common saying that money can buy anything except happiness. Well, there is another thing that money cannot buy and that is, success. The biggest example of the latter fact can be seen in the cash-rich, Indian Premier League. Every franchise at some point or the other has paid an extravagant amount to buy some star player while some justify their fee; there are others who disappoint because of their lackluster performance. There are also other players who have a good track record in the shortest format of the game, they yet go unsold.

Here we bring you the list of the players who were bought for an astonishingly high fee, yet they under-performed in the tournament.

IPL

Andrew Flintoff (Chennai Super Kings): During his heydays, he was the best all-rounder, in both One-day and test format. He was bought by Chennai Super Kings in the 2009 IPL auctions for an amount of $1.55 million. Freddie was known for his destructive batting and his bowling, especially the reverse swing. But unfortunately, his IPL career never took off. After playing just 3 matches; scoring 62 runs and taking two wickets, he returned home for an ankle surgery following which he could never regain his full fitness. He later announced retirement from all forms of the sport.

Daniel Christian (Deccan Chargers): Hardly anyone knew Daniel Christian before the 2011 IPL auction. His claim to fame was when he was bought by Deccan Chargers for a fee of $900,000. Before that he had played only three T20 internationals for Australia. He was a perfect player when it came to T20. He had the ability to hit the big shots and bowl at a medium pace. But he was a big disappointment, as he did not perform well enough during the tournament and scored 335 runs and 19 wickets in 21 matches.

IPL

Robin Uthappa (Pune Warriors India):  In the third edition of IPL, the now defunct Pune Warriors India had bought Robin Uthappa for a staggering $2.1 million. In that IPL auction, he was the second most expensive player. The idea was to build a team around Yuvraj and Uthappa. He played for three seasons for the franchise and scored 1103 runs in 46 matches. Although, he scored well individually, but his role in the core team failed miserably.

Tyron Henderson (Rajasthan Royals): Before being bought by Rajasthan Royals for a huge sum of $650,000 (His base price was $100,000). They paid for him more than their captain Shane Warne. At that time, he was considered a T20 specialist and had taken the most T20 wickets. He played only two games for Rajasthan Royals, scoring just 11 runs and taking 1 wicket.

IPL

Dinesh Karthik (Delhi Daredevils): Throughout the history of the tournament, Delhi Daredevils have continued to be at the bottom of the table. Dinesh Karthik was the second highest bid in the 2014 IPL auctions. He was second only to Yuvraj Singh. Most of the cricketing Pundits were shocked because of the bid. Dinesh Karthik scored a measly 325 runs at an average of 23 and scored three half-centuries in 14 matches. Behind the stumps also Karthik was just average.
