Street food you must try in Amritsar

If there is one truth I have realised post my first time visit to Amritsar, it is that nowhere is street food better than here – spicy sweet tangy sour and  creamy and greasy, it’s all out there on the street and yes it’s finger licking good! Whether it is the famous Amritsari kulcha or fish or just chai – it’s simply the best in Amritsar.

TEA

Starting with the humble tea. Gurmit Singh’s Giani Tea Stall on Queen’s Road has been around for half a decade and his tea in a glass could bring the dead back to life.

LUXE LASSI & KOOL KULFI

As for the sweet treats, the lassi and the kulfi-faloodas will transport you straight to heaven! The lassiwallah S. Surjan Singh Milk Bhandar at Chowk Regent Cinema in Amritsar has also been around for 50 years or more and as he swears, a finer frothier lassi is yet to be found! Then there are creamy kulfis, replete with slivers of rich crunchy dry fruit that are found at a multitude of outlets.

CHOLE PURI & KULCHA

Coming to the main course, try the chole in gleaming shining copper vessels hoisted on bicycles in Ram Maidan and Puri-Aloo Sabzi at Kanhas on Lawrence Road. Also the Amritsari kulchas at a dhaba called Kulchaland on Ranjit Avenue. Deliciously crisp, it is stuffed with potato and onion and baked in a tandoor and then a generous dollop of butter is patted on and it is served with a tangy chutney and chole.

CHICKAN SHIKAN

As for the carnivores among us, the dhabhas serving non-vegetarian food are Friends Dhaba on Queen’s Road, Amber on Lawrence Road and Sheetal Glass House also on Queens Road. Here the Tandoori Chicken is  marinated to perfection and touched up with desi ghee. Also  try also the divine Tava Chicken, Sangahda and Soul Fish and the Mutton Tikka Bada, with hot rotis or parathas at Makhans, Manjhita Road.
