Firefox phone – A great internet experience at a dirt cheap price.

A smartphone for a modest Rs 2,000, but should you get one?

If a few months ago, you had told us that, we would have smelled your breath for fumes of alcohol. For, let’s face it, even going for something as basic as the Moto E would leave you poorer by Rs 5,999.

The affordable alternatives all came with some trade off or the other – the cameras would be poor, the display would be way too low-res, and processors would be slowand so on and so forth.

And into this mix come Spice and Intex with a whole new mobile OS called Firefox phone, which they claim delivers a decent smartphone experience to users for as little as (gasp!) Rs 1,999. Well, Rs 1,999 for the Intex Cloud Fx and Rs 2,299 for the Spice Fire One, to be exact.

So the first obvious question is that why on earth are these devices so affordable and should one consider investing in them?Well, the answers are pretty simple. They cost relatively little because they focus more on delivering a good Internet experience rather than dazzling you with sophisticated graphics and hardware like you see in so many smartphones today.

“They focus more on delivering a good Internet experience rather than dazzling you with sophisticated graphics and hardware.”

The Firefox phone comes with a single core processors and a mere 128 MB RAM. Their cameras are very modest affairs. Which might make some people wonder: what DO they have?

In a word, the browser, Mozilla, the company behind the Firefox Phone, is also known for its Firefox browser on computers, and it is a version of this browser that you see on these phones.

We were able to browse multiple sites using tabbed browsing and view videos within the browser easily. And while the storage on these devices is a humble 256 MB, the apps are all optimised to run on the Web, and therefore are very small in size.

So you can install dozens of apps without too much trouble and they are designed to run smoothly even on a slow 2G connection. Battery life is pretty good too.

So should you buy the Firefox phone? Well, if all you want is surfing on the Web, then we definitely think you should give it a shot. However, if you are the type that likes high-definition gaming and photography, then stay away. The price howeveris just unbelievable. Pinch us again, please!
