Dam Laga Ke Haisha - Movie review

A sweet and simple movie

Set in the 90s, Dum Laga Ke Haisha is a story of a couple, which struggles to come to terms with the reality of their marriage. Prem (Ayushmann Khurrana) is a small town boy from the who is so afraid from the English language, that he even leaves his education. He has great difficulty in accepting the fact that he has been married to a lady who is not only overweight, but also more educated than him. Sandhya (Bhumi Pednekar) is on the heavier side of life and is educated. The two traits of her become her bane, because her husband, Prem doesn’t really loves her. The story revolves around a mismatched couple living in a small town and how they overcome their problems.

After decades Yash Raj Films have come out with a movie which is not stereotypical. There are no over the top dance sequences or sudden change in the behaviour of the character. Everything is given time. The movie is realistic, and people can actually relate to it, especially those who have grown up in the 90s.

As far as acting is concerned, the actors have done a remarkable job.

Hawaizaada might have been a disaster for Ayushmann Khurrana, but Dum Laga Ke Haisha will definitely be his best work till date. He did a fantastic job of portraying a foolish yet egoistic Prem.

Although, it is her first film, Bhumi Pednekar is surprisingly confident. No one else in the industry could do a role of an over-sized woman trying to win her husband’s love. With such an unconventional debut role, Pednekar has definitely set a benchmark for future debutantes.

Director Sharat Katariya has probably done a huge favour to Yash Raj Studios by churning out such beautiful film.  Nostalgia is one the strongest emotions a person can have, and this film is full of it. From the cassette players to Kumar Sanu’s songs, Dum Laga Ke Haisha is something that those who have grown up in the 90s will like. Set in the holy town of Haridwar, the movie is quirky in its soul. Its honest script and some wonderful performances by the cast has set this movie apart from rest of the films that have come out from Yash Raj Studio. With its easy to relate/connect approach, Dum Laga Ke Haisha can be the top contenders for this year.
