Khalsa Aid -In service of fellow human beings

Across the globe, Sikhs are known to be fearless and generous. They will help anyone who is in need. This has been their tradition since the time the religion came into being.  This tradition has been carried forward across centuries by the followers of the religion; the latest being they setting up of a bakery in the war-torn Syria to prove food to the Yazidis.

While most of us worry and only ‘talk’ about the worsening situation in Syria because of Al Assad and ISIS, a group of Punjabi NRIs has collaborated with locals to prove fresh bread daily to 14,000 refugees. This has been going around for quite some time now.

Langar Aid is an extension of Khalsa Aid – A UK based NGO. They have set up the bakery in the Syrian border. Almost 70% of the volunteers have Punjabi roots while the rest are European volunteers.

What Langar Aid has done is that they haven’t set-up a classic kitchen, instead they have set up a bakery because the IS fighters destroy any food which comes from outside for the Yazidis. Khalsa Aid has provided the machinery and the building has been provided with help from Kurdistan. The local government in Duhok is providing free power.

The group is also getting help from Serbia and Greece which also happen to be the neighbouring European countries.

A UK based volunteer of Indian origin Indy  Hothi said, “We set up a bakery at a refugee camp for Yazidi people to provide a self-sustaining solution. We are also trying to set a school for 5,000 local children on the Lebanon-Syrian border.” The idea is to take the langar outside the walls of the Gurudwara and share the food with those people who need it the most,” added Hothi.
