Wimbledon

A part of India in the Wimbledon championships.

It is just not the Indian players who have shined at the Wimbledon this year, there are other ‘Indian’ things which form a major part of the Wimbledon, but we fail to notice, because we are not aware of them.

Tennis is one the most physically demanding game and while at it the players sweat a lot.To take care of the sweat, there are towels. Ever wondered where do the Wimbledon towels come from?  It might come as a shock to you that the towels which are used in Wimbledon are manufactured in India.  The towels are manufactured at a facility in Vapi, Gujarat. The iconic towels belong to the Welspun Group which has been manufacturing towels for few years.

Earlier the towels were provided by a Manchester-based company known as Christy for 35 years. They were supplying to towels for the championship for 35 years. It was in 2006 that the company was acquired by Welspun which shifted the manufacturing of the towels to two sites – Anjar in Kutch and Vapi in Valsad, both in Gujarat. The company has invested around Rs3,000 in these two manufacturing units.

The design of the towel changes every three years. The towels which are for men have the iconic club colours dark green and purple which are enhanced by gold. On the other hand, the colour and design of the towels for women change each year.

The towels are designed at least one year in advance at the Welspun Design Studio in the UK. The towels usually come in the traditional bright green or pink colours. The towels also incorporate the championship logo and along with the historical and current years, which come in the colour of buttermilk.

The towels are the second most popular memorabilia which is being sold. Approximately around 50,000 units are sold each year at the tournament. One reason is that these towels are sold for 29 pounds a -piece.  Another the reason why the towels are popular as memorabilia is because of the emotional connect. There is a tradition in Wimbledon where the players throw their towels to the crowd. It is a huge thing for the fans. This is somewhat like an unsaid thing.

So the next time you see the Wimbledon towel, remember where it came from.
