Shoes are one the oldest things that humans have ever owned. They have a rich history and date back to almost 8,000BC. Over a period of thousands of years shoes have gone through a lot of changes, from material to shape and to who is wearing what type of shoe, a lot has changed as far as shoes are concerned. Some of these shoes have been popular with the masses while some of them have not been that much popular. Some of them are even bizarre yet, they have stood the test of time.

Here we bring you top 10 peculiar shoes throughout the history of shoes.

Okobo, Japan: These shoes were worn by the Japanese Maiko (apprentice geisha).  The reason they used to wear was not entirely to make a fashion statement. They also had a practical use.  Since these shoes were high, they used to keep the kimonos off the ground. This would prevent them from getting dirty from the mud. And since kimono was and still is expensive attire, it used to help maintain the dress. The height of these shoes was usually around 5 ½ inches or 14 cms. These shoes were made up of just one piece of wood, which used to form the sole. The wood sole would be carved hollow, giving them a distinctive sound when walking.

Kabkabs, Lebanon:  These shoes were silver studded and were usually worn by women in the Middle East. These shoes were a practical way of keeping the dirt and the mud off the bottom of their clothes. These shoes were generally worn by those belonged to the high class or rich families. These shoes were several inches high and were embroidered with leather and silk or velvet straps. These were also worn by brides. During those times, brides were usually girls and were small in stature. In order to compensate for the height, they were made to wear these shoes.

Plaited birch bark shoe, Finland: These shoes were worn by the Finnish women on a daily basis, with cloth foot wraps inserts. These were also used as overshoes to protect more costly leather shoes against natural elements such as rain, mud and snow. These shoes were generally made from birch bark. Sometime lime-tree bark was also used to make these shoes. Norway, Sweden and Russia too have their own version of the shoe.

Heelless shoes: These shoes are relatively new, but still they are quite bizarre. These shoes were designed by the famous Italian-American designer Antonio Berardi. They were showed to the world in 2007 and became famous when Victoria Beckham wore them. These shoes look extremely uncomfortable, but the designer claimed that these shoes are just like regular shoes and the fact that they do not cause any pain to the wearer.  However, doctors have showed their concerns and said that if worn on a regular basis can cause permanent damage to the feet, knees and spine.
