Talvar movie review

Talvar

A gripping thriller that engages the audience’s attention throughout.

Based on the sensational Arushi double murder case which had gripped the whole nation, Talvar retells the story of the probably botched up investigation. The fact that media is hungry for TRPs has been showcased really well in the movie. The fact that internal office politics the investigation agency botched up the case is also true. What makes Talvar different from rest of the Bollywood crime thriller movies is that it has treated the real case, from which the makers took the inspiration quite well.

There is also a side story which runs alongside the main story; the personal life of investigation officer Ashwin Kumar. Although, it is clear that everything is not going well with his wife; both of them still care about each other.

The narrative of the film is excellent. There is a police officer who is least bothered about the case; his only aim is to get his next promotion. In the second half when a new investigation team comes to examine the case, the investigation officer is more interested in getting his friends on board. Then there are the neighbours who have made their own conclusions to the case. All these factors have made the narrative quite good. The writer prepares such a broth, that it makes the movie more exciting to watch.

The narrative has shown the parents both as sufferers and as the parents who have killed their own daughter. These two narratives come as a part of what the two investigation teams conclude, and both the conclusions are opposite.

The last sequence where both the investigation teams are battling it out to prove each other wrong is the stuff of legends.

Now talking about the performances, there was not even a slightest chink in the armour. All the actors did their part really well. But one actor’s whose performance stood out was Sumit Gulati, who portrayed the character of Kanhaiya. How he manages to float the rumour about explicit sexual relationships and how in the polygraph test he confesses the crime is a masterpiece by him.

Konkona and Neeraj play the parents; from being the perpetrator and then becoming the victim they play their roles well.

Overall the film has been made really well. It gives us a relief from the usual Bollywood singing and dancing sequences. Although, at the end you were left with a feeling that the makers do sympathize with the parents. If you are looking for something refreshing and dark, then Talvar is the movie for you – Do not miss it!
