Introduction

Creativity is what defines Rohit Bal, the quintessential Peter Pan of the Indian fashion design industry. The endearing fashion designer, who turned fifty this year, says he is in a happy place with his work as well as his personal life.

Gudda, as he is known in the industry, says he feels as young and energised today as he did when he started out. His tip for staying young – be eager to always try something new.

Rohit Bal’s creations are a reflection of his own personality, aesthetics and a freewheeling creative energy. His creative mind finds an outlet in his work, leading to some of the most intricate and flamboyant designs. Hailed as ‘India’s master of fabric and fantasy, he has won international acclaim for his illustrious 25 years in fashion.

“I draw inspiration from the natural beauty of Kashmir”

Education

He was always passionate about design. With the urge to learn more he joined NIFT Delhi where he learned the art of fashion from cutting to stitching. Initially Rohit worked with his brother’s export company but later, he created his independent line of garments. His initial creation was traditional men’s wear.

Bal says he draws all his strength and inspiration from the natural beauty of Kashmir while growing up as a child. He says, “When I came to study at St Stephen’s, I imbibed all the charm and mystic beauty of the place into my psyche.”

Still virgin from B-town

The one area the fashion designer has stayed away from is Bollywood. Though he admits he is friends with many film stars, he claims that he is unable to take film projects because he cannot follow the schedule. He feels that designs should be in focus at a fashion show but film stars tend to overshadow the designs. “After all it is to the designs that I owe what I am today to”, says Rohit.

Bal concludes, “Expanding my ability to do something apart from my core genre is very rejuvenating. Every designer who can do more than his core competency should surely go for it.”
