Movie Review : Badlapur

If you want to see a non-conventional movie with one of the leading upcoming superstars, then you must go and watch Badlapur. Most viewers believe, that the upcoming superstars of the Indian film industry cannot do roles which are demanding and realistic. Here is where they go wrong.

Badlapur : A regular movie with a fresh apporach

Badlapur is a film, which is unlike any other film in India. It is one those movies which is performance driven and probably the best neo-noir film that has come out of the Indian sub-continent so far. The gore in the movie is something that the Indian audience might not be used to seeing in a bollywood movie, hence it is surprisingly refreshing. It is a film which cannot be enjoyed by everyone; it will have specific audience who will like the movie. But what will work for it with the regular audience is the fact that it is something new.

The story revolves around Raghu (Varun Dhawan), who is leading a happy life with his wife Mishti (Yami Gautam) and their son Robin. Things go bad when Mishiti and Robin are killed in a bank robbery. This incident destroys Raghu and he is never able to come to terms with his regular life.

When one the robbers, Laik (Nawazuddin Siddiqui) is caught by the police, Raghu tries to take his revenge by sleeping with Laik’s prostitute girlfriend (Huma Qureshi). Laik has been sentenced to prison for a period of 20 years. But after 15 years he is granted bail due to his ill health. The real story starts when he comes out of the jail.

The script of Badlapur is strong, but Sriram Raghavan has not gone by the rules. He has kept the whole affair simple, which takes everyone by surprise, and he has done quite a good job.

As far as the acting is concerned Varun Dhawan has done a good job. His debut movie might be Student of the year, but his real debut movie in terms of acting is Badlapur. He has proven that he can act and do serious roles, and that he is here to stay.

Nawazuddin has again proved that you don’t need good looks to do well in the industry. He is on a different level altogether. There are actors who grow in skill when they do more and more movies, Nawazuddin is already there, and no one can take it from him. The time you actually start empathizing with the character is the moment when the actor has done a good job. His dark sense of humour in the film is brilliant. He is like jack of all trades. He is capable of doing any role convincingly.

The film is all about twists, Varun Dhawan and Nawazuddin Siddiqui. Both of them have given an excellent performance. Don’t give it a second thought, just go and watch the movie.
