Facts you should know about INS Kochi

INS Kochi

The mean machine of the Indian Navy.

INS Kochi was commissioned by Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar on Wednesday. The stealth guided missile destroyer was commissioned at the naval dockyard in Mumbai. INS Kochi is the 10th destroyer to be inducted in the Indian Naval Fleet. It is a shot in the arm of the Indian Navy, as a number of vessels have been used beyond their time, and with the couple of unfortunate incidents that occurred in the last few years, the Indian Navy really needed to boost its strength.

Here are a few facts that you must know about the destroyer.

INS Kochi is the largest Indigenous warship of India.

The warship has been designed by the Navy’s in house organisation, directorate of naval design. It was constructed by the Mazgaon Dock Ship Builders Ltd in Mumbai.

INS Kochi has a displacement of 7,500 tons. The warship is 164 meters in length and 17 meters at its beam.

The warship has four gas turbines that propel it. The ship can achieve the maximum speed of 30 knots.

The warship has a crew of 40 officers and 350 sailors.

The motto of INS Kochi is Jahi Shatrun Mahabaho which means Armed to conquer the enemy.

INS Kochi is packed with state-of-the-art weapons and sensors, and most of these weapons and sensors have been made in India.

The 7, 5000 tonne INS Kochi is the second of the three planned Kolkata Class destroyers that are being built at the Mazagaon Docks (MDL) at Mumbai. Each of these Kolkata Class destroyers will cost around Rs 4,000 crore apiece. INS Kochi is also the 10th destroyer in the Indian Fleet.

The First of its class, INS Kolkata was commissioned last year in August.

The third destroyer, INS Chennai will be commissioned by the end of 2016.
